  • The Evening Grosbeaks flew up into the mountain hemlock. They had been feeding on something on the ground. I stood still and they went back to feeding. Different individuals would fly up for a few seconds look around and then go back to feeding.

  • The tide was going out and I found this ochre sea star on the side of a rock with various algae. The sea star didn't move in the 20 minutes I stood nearby watching. I was intrigued by the design formed by the sea star and the brown algae.

  • The small tide pool had a wonderful example of the giant green sea anemone. The anemone was 3 or 4 inches across and you can easily see its mouth in the middle of its circle of tentacles.

  • As the tide fell, the ochr sea stars became exposed and easily seen. Their tube feet held them tight to the rock as the waves crashed across them. I sat down on a rock to take the picture as close as I could to their level. Each wave kept the bottom three wet and put spray on the rest. The afternoon light made them glow.

  • The mussels formed a dense clump around this small tide pool. A single giant green anemone hung on the side of the pool. The mussels are favorite food of the ochr sea stars and therefore tend to be found higher in the intertidal zone than sea stars can go.

  • I found these eleven ochre sea stars clumped together in a tight line. I wondered what had brought them together in such a tight group. The tide had just pulled beyond them so they still had a wet glow to their surface..
